The nature reserve "The High Fens" and its environment
The High Fens in the east of the province Liège, (Eastern Cantons) is one of the most precious nature reserve of Belgium and deserves a special protection. It's definitely one of the most original landscapes of the Ardennes and the Eifel. The landscape looks mysterious by fog and very beautiful by sunshine or covered underneath a pile of snow. The severe climate of the area, heavy rainfall, long and cold winters and cool temperatures makes it possible to several species of flora to survive.
Here we find several unique species like the heath,shrubs, heather, bilberries, gorse.... The High Fens are for 90 % consisting out of pine trees. The other part of the forest surface consists of other hard woods.
Several rivers have their sources in the High Fens. There are five dams who are supplying more than one million habitants of water.
The fauna (deer, wild boar, red deer, red fox,...) are living in the whole area. There are a few thousand deer, and about a thousand wild boar. Other protected animals like pine marten, wild cat, black grouse are living also there, also a large variety of typical birds and insects. The locations like "Baraque Michel", the "Mont-Rigi", and the "Signal de Botrange" (the highest peak of Belgium - 694 m) are very high recommended as departure to explore The Fens.
In the middle of the unique landscape of the High Fens, you will certainly be tempted by the Centre Nature (nature center). For specific walks in the nature reserve, guided or not, in group or on your own, several walks will be proposed. Throughout the year you can visit the exhibition "In search of the lost scenery" (with audioguide, there are also temporary exhibits organized with various themes, also a lot of events such as Christmas market, sheepman happening, etc.... Daily you can visit the center for all information about the nature reserve the High Fens.
Hiking, cycling, mountainbike, cross-country(Xhoffraix 2 km) skiing and alpine skiing are the most famous sports of tourists who visit the area in all seasons. Thanks to the different sports facilities, the swimming pool, the large lakes in the middle of the splendid nature, the 850 km marked paths, and the incredible net of walkingpaths, you can discover most beautiful hidden spots, landscapes, nature reserves and typical villages.
During the wintertime the skitracks of Ovifat are as well suitable for the speedfreaks as well as fort the slalom-skiers. The cross-country skiing tracks are leading you through idyllic landscapes and thanks to the sleigh track is this area a real pleasure for all families, who love wintersports. Of course we can't forget a ride with the snowscooter, this is for a lot of guests an unforgetable experience!
Discover the lake of Robertville, at the edge of The Fens, near the highest peak in Belgium, (Signal de Botrange - 694m), where nature with its 8750 acres of forest, is still important. Here water is essential. There are many different things to do : swimming in the lake, there is even a special pool for the kids, cycling on a pedal boat, playing beach games or relaxing on the green shore of the lake.
Robertville means the old "Burg de Reinhardstein", that towers high above a wonderful forest, perfect for hikers and bird-watchers. This castle, with its incredible collection of works of art, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Belgium. Reinhardstein was built in the fourteenth century, and destroyed after the French Revolution and was rebuilt from 1969 on. It is now occupied throughout the year.
Only a few minutes away from our family hotel you can discover the waterfall "Le Bayehon", it finds his source on the plateau of the Botrange, and joins the stream "The warche", nearby the castle Reinhardstein. A real beauty of untouched nature.
Spa-Francorchamps is one of the most loveliest track for the Formula-1 GP : a track in the middle of a green hilly landscape in the middle of the Ardennes with his exciting curves like the chicane of Stavelot. Except the F1 there are from February till November a lot of other happenings like L'Ardenne Bleue Rally, 1000 km, Proximus 24 hours of Spa....
Malmedy, most beautifully flowered town of Europe (1996), is certainly worth to be visited. There are a lot of curiosity like historical buildings, cathedral, churches, chapels, squares, museums.... Malmedy is rich in folklore and numerous events are organized during the year for your enjoyment. Malmedy is well-supplied with shops for every taste, the town is compact enough you'll find plenty of shopping opportunities on your own.
